Tip of the Month: Searching Tips
Over the past several weeks I have received several e-mails inquiring about specific types of searches. I thought you would enjoy the questions and answers.
When I do a search for a word like: "decenter", I get a whole list of findings including "decent". How do I get only the one word I ask for like "decenter"?
When we search for a word and get all forms of the word, that feature is called "stemming". For example, a search for faith will return hits for faithful, faithfulness, etc. To locate just a specific word, we have to use a nostem search. Type this in the Search box and you'll find just your word:
nostem(faith)
I am having difficulties searching my set of theological journals. The results are too many or absolutely none. I would like to just search Romans 5:18, how can I do that?
The Basic Search dialog allows us to search for a specific reference in any resource or collection of resources.
- Open the Basic Search from the Search menu
- Set the In box to your journals (or any collection)
- Type this in the Search box: Bible = "Romans 5:18"
- Click Search
Is there a way to make a search case sensitive? For example, I want to search for the word "lord" when it refers to someone in charge rather than "Lord" referring, of course, to God.
By default, Libronix searches are not case sensitive, but you can easily make any search case sensitive by typing this in the Search box of either the Bible or Basic Search:
This will locate lord, but not Lord.
Book of the Month: All the Questions in the Bible
Occasionally I'm asked if there's a way to search for all the questions in a book of the Bible. Currently, I don't know of a way (if you do, please share that with me). Logos does have a resource, however, that does the work for us. It's appropriately named, All the Questions in the Bible
. The author divides his book into chapters, with each chapter corresponding to a book in the Bible. He then lists all of the questions in that book, based on the KJV. This resource is located in most of the Logos base collections.
The verses in the book can easily be extracted and placed in a Verse List for future reference:
- Open All the Questions in the Bible from My Library
- Display the Table of Contents for the book by clicking the Toggle Contents Pane icon located on its toolbar
- Click a book of the Bible in the contents pane to jump to that location
- Select (highlight) all of the text for that Bible book
- Right click on the selection
- Select Auto-Lookup from the right menu
- In the Auto-Lookup window click Export Results to Verse List to transfer all of those verses to the document
When you close the Verse List, you'll be prompted to save and name the document. In the future, you can open the verse list at File > Open.
