Tip of the Month: English Preview in Greek Text

Here is a recent e-mail from a Logos user:

In the NA27 on my desktop, when I hover my cursor over a Greek word I get a preview window with the Greek Lemma, the morphology, and the English translation. I got a new laptop and installed Logos on it to use when I'm away from my desk, but the preview only has the Greek Lemma, and the morphology -- no English translation. It's not a big deal most of the time, but my personal vocabulary is not as good as it ought to be and having the English has been helpful many times. I can't find a setting to change what shows in the preview tip window. Any idea where it's hidden?

Here is the solution to his question:

  • Choose Tools | Options | KeyLink
  • Select English as the Data Type
  • Click Display
  • Select Preview KeyLink in Tip Window from the When Mouse Hovers Over a Data Type Reference drop down list
  • Click Close

If you use the NA27 Greek text and none of your previews are showing up, just follow the above steps and change the Data Type to Greek and then Greek Morphology (Logos). Now when you rest the cursor on a Greek word in the NA27, you'll see a popup of the Greek Lemma and morphology as well as an English literal translation.

As always, I enjoy getting practical questions from Logos users so feel free to use this link to e-mail me questions that may find their way into the newsletter.

Book of the Month: Bible Study Magazine

During the last ten years, you have gotten to know me through my training for Logos Bible Software. While there is no question about my love for this incredible tool, my real passion in life is preaching / teaching the Bible itself . Logos is the vehicle through which I study the Bible for the preaching / teaching ministry. I now want to recommend another tool from the developers of Logos: Bible Study Magazine. I recently saw my first issue of this magazine and was incredibly impressed! The entire magazine, as it name says, is devoted to Bible study. Here are some of the articles in the first issue:

  • Choosing a Bible Translation
  • Greek Word Study without Greek
  • Facing Today with the Book of Hebrews

Many periodicals have articles and devotionals about Bible passages. This magazine, however, concentrates on "how to study the Bible." You can continue to equip yourself and others with the essentials of Bible study methodology.

If you're a pastor, please consider getting your leadership and teachers on board. If you're thinking about Christmas gifts that will make a lasting impact and continue throughout the year, please check out this very practical resource.

Product of the Month: NEW Bible Book Abbreviations Quick Card

As you well know, we type a lot of Bible references in our Bible software. In a Passage Guide we type John 3:16. In a Bible we enter Romans 8:28. Then in a commentary we type Ephesians 3:17. Did you know, however, that you don't have to type the entire name of the Bible book? You can abbreviate in a variety of ways. For example, you can type D 8.3 and go to Deuteronomy 8:3. Just enter J 1 8 and you'll jump to Joshua 1:8.

In response to numerous questions on the shortest way to abbreviate each book of the Bible, I have produced a new laminated Quick Card that will do just that. On one side you'll find the books of the Old Testament in alphabetical order with their shortest possible abbreviation that Libronix recognizes. The flip side does the same for the New Testament.

Just keep this card by your keyboard until you learn each one. Believe me, these shortcuts will add up to save you valuable time as you study the Word.
