Tip of the Month: Searching a Few Bibles at Once

I was recently e-mailed this question:

I use Bible Search a lot, and I find it very helpful to search for a word in multiple translations instead of just one. However, searching in All Unlocked Bibles brings up more Greek texts than English ones. How can I specify, set up and name a permanent choice or group so I can search a selected list of translations instead of one or all?

If you've asked the same question, you may find this tip helpful:

When you use the Bible Search dialog you'll notice you can search one Bible at a time or all of your Bibles. What if, as the Logos user asked, you want to search more than one, but not all of your Bibles? For example, you only want to search the ESV, NKJV, and KJV.

You have two options:

First, you could open onto the screen those three Bibles.

Then in the Bible Search dialog, select All Open Bibles from the Bibles drop down list.

Or you could choose Tools | Define Collections to create a collection with those three Bibles in it.

Then in the Bible Search dialog, select that collection from the Bibles drop down list.

Book of the Month: Preaching the Word Illustrations

A very popular set of commentaries is Preaching the Word by Kent Hughes.

I recently discovered in the back of his commentaries is an Index of Sermon Illustrations. Here are the steps you want to follow to find his illustrations by topic. At first you might think it's too much trouble, but after you do it a couple of times, the process will go quickly.

First create a collection for the Preaching the Word commentaries:

Choose Tools | Define Collection

Add all of his books to the collection

To search the collection:

Choose Search | Basic Search

Set the In box to this Preaching the Word Collection

Type this in the search box: "Index of Sermon Illustrations" case(Angels)
Click Search
When the Search Results are returned click Aligned Hits in Context

Here's what's happening:

In the back of the book is a section entitled Index of Sermon Illustrations. Each illustration topic, like Angels, is capitalized with all of the illustrations for that topic listed underneath. We're searching his books where the phrase Index of Sermon Illustrations and the case sensitive word Angels appear in the same article. The align hits feature just list the hits so we can see them more easily. When you click one of the search hits, you'll be taken to the index page where all of the specific sermon illustrations are hyperlinked.

I know this is a few steps, but hopefully his relevant illustrations will reward your hard work.
