Tip of the Month: 2009 Preaching Calendar Folders

This month's tip is primarily for pastors, but everyone should benefit from the tip in the Book of the Month section.

If you're a pastor you've probably already commenced or completed your preaching calendar for the year. Having decided what we're going to preach each week of the year, we then traditionally label 52 file folders corresponding to each week. Since we don't have perfect memories, as we develop ideas or gather information we place it in the correct folder. For example, if we find an illustration about patience, which is the sermon topic for the second week of June, we place that illustration in the second week of the June folder. This same procedure is also accomplished electronically with 52 Word documents. Now when we're ready to actually prepare June's sermon we have access to all of this material!

The great news, though, is that we can do this more efficiently within our Logos Bible Software using the Sermon File Addin (SFA) which is available as a separate purchase from your Bible software. Instead of listing the lengthy instructions here, I've placed them on our website.

Also, I have already created and indexed these 52 SFA documents corresponding the Sundays of 2009! Once you have the SFA installed you can download these 52 documents for FREE at our website. Complete instructions will be available at the site. Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Book of the Month: Harmonies

Some events in the Bible are recorded in more than one location. The different verses that describe the same biblical event are called parallel passages. The resources listing the parallel passages are called harmonies. Logos combines these two into an automated report called Parallel Passages and Harmonies located at
Tools | Bible Comparison.

Regarding this report, I recently received this question:

Is there a way to go from the passage I am studying to that particular passage in a Harmony? I find myself mostly skipping the Harmonies of the OT and NT because it takes so long to find what I want there.

Excellent question! Hopefully the answer will be helpful to you:

The Passage Guide is the solution for the question.

  • Open the Passage Guide (PG) from the toolbar or at Tools | Bible Study | Passage Guide
  • Open a Bible
  • Tile the windows at Window | Tile Vertically
  • Link the PG and Bible to Set A using the chain link icon on each window
  • Jump to a location in your Bible like Ex 20 and you'll notice the PG goes there as well
  • One section of the PG is Parallel Passages and Harmonies (PPH)

Obviously the PG is giving you a lot more info than PPH. You have 2 choices to limit the info in the PG:

You can click the Properties icon on the PG and uncheck the information you don't want to appear.

      OR

  • Generate a complete PG report like you did above for Ex 20
  • Click the minus sign (-) next to each section in the report like Commentaries, Cross References, etc.
  • This will turn the minus sign to a plus sign (+) and pause the search for that section. When you need the information, just click the plus sign.

For example, click all of the minus signs in the report except PPH. Go to Mt 16.18 in your Bible and the PG only lists the PPH with all of the other sections still collapsed!

Product of the Month: Sermons of Rob Morgan Volume 5

We have just released another 100 sermons of Robert Morgan in the Sermon File Addin (SFA) format. Rob is my (Morris) preaching mentor and great friend. As I have said before, he is a tremendous expositor and the best sermon illustrator you will ever hear. All of his sermons are loaded with practical stories, quotes and antidotes that help to apply the passage.

I have personally indexed these SFA documents according to the Passages and Topics discussed in each . If you have the SFA (which is required to access theses files ) these documents will automatically load into the correct folder. Once installed, just open any one of your SFA documents and click Compile to add these sermons to your Sermons of "Your Name" book.

Whether you're a preacher, teacher, or someone who just loves reading good expositions, you will benefit from these sermons as well as the previous four volumes. Volume 5 contains several sermon series such as:

    • Expositions of Leviticus
    • Miracle Man (expositions on the life of Elisha)
    • God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity
    • Everyday Living (habits for daily living)
    • Heaven
    • Life is Good (sermons dealing with each stage of life)
    • Like Sea Billows Roll (related to living during difficult times)
    • Breaking Through- Be of Good Cheer (examining Jesus' use of this phrase)
    • And more

You can order a copy and the previous volumes at our website.
