Tips of the Month: Note Indicators in All Bibles

I try my best to make this newsletter as helpful and practical as possible. One way I accomplish this is to include actual questions I get ask from Logos users like yourself. This month I'll share three of the many e-mails I received this month. I hope you'll find these answers helpful.

If you would like to suggestion a topic for the newsletter click here.

First, someone asked if it is possible to be in the KJV and attach a note to a Note File but have the "post it" note indicator show up in all Bibles. The answer is a resounding YES!

When you are in any Bible (or commentary) right click on a word in the verse
From the right menu select Add a Note | to your desired Note File | Add a Note to your verse

This will create a note in your note file as well as place the note indicators in all of your versified books specifically Bibles and commentaries.

Sermon Files for Different Speakers

Another Logos user writes:

"I have been copying and pasting my pastor's sermons into the Sermon File Addin, but how do I account for different speakers.  If our Executive Pastor preaches instead of our Senior Pastor, they all say the same author when compiled.  How do I get the Sermons for each speaker separated?"

Please remember that your Sermon File Addin will create two new books for you: Sermons of "Your Name" and Illustrations of "Your Name". You can add to these two books, however, documents from as many different sources as you like. The way to separate the different sources or speakers is to use the Tags field in the Details section of each Sermon File Document.

For example let's say you add a new sermon manuscript from my good friend Rob Morgan and you also add one of Morris Proctor's sermons. In the Tags field of each document simply type Morgan or Proctor.

After clicking Compile, these documents will be added to your Sermon File books. Open one of the books and display it Table of Contents pane. Scroll to the bottom of the Contents Pane until you locate the Index. Inside the Index, you'll see a section called Tags and all of your documents will be categorized by the different sources.

Book of the Month: King James Bible Word Book

Even though we now have many translations of the Bible the King James Bible remains a favorite and treasured version. In light of this my good friend and avid Logos user Robby Dean e-mailed with these suggestion:

A fun and helpful book you should talk about is the King James Bible Word Book which explains the meaning of many archaic words in the KJV.
Many of these don't necessarily appear archaic today, but their meaning has shifted significantly.

So thanks to Robby here are a couple of suggestions:

Since this book is topically indexed according to English words you can KeyLink it to your English Data Type.

  • Choose Tools | Options |KeyLink
  • Set the Data Type to English
  • From the list of Default Order of Resources select the King James Bible Word Book (if, of course, you have purchased this book)
  • Click Promote
  • Click Close

Now open the KJV to a verse containing an "archaic" word and double click the word to open your Word Book

Also you can search this book by Bible verse or chapter.

  • Open the Word Book
  • Press Ctrl + R to open the Reference Browser (which basically works like the Scripture reference index in the back of a book)
  • Set the In box to the Word Book
  • Set the Type box to Bible
  • Type your verse or chapter in the Find box like John 3
  • Click Search to locate every occurrence of this reference in the Word Book
  • Click a hit in the Results list to jump to that location
