Tip of the Month: Working with Theological Journals

I have received several e-mails recently asking various questions about the Theological Journal Library (TJL). So this month I’ll pass along several tips on searching the journals.

Search Collections

First, when you install the TJL, Libronix collections are created for each journal as well as a complete collection of all the journals. To see these collections:

  • Open the Galaxie Software Home Page in Libronix by clicking the small black arrow next to the Home icon on your Libronix toolbar (opening this home page one time after installation is what creates the collections for you)
  • Open the Basic Search, Topic Browser or Reference Browser and click on the In drop down list to select which journals to search

Of course you can create your own search collections of journals at Tools | Define Collections.

Topic Search

There are several helpful ways to search the journals including by topic, Bible reference, phrase or author.

The journals are topically indexed so you can easily search them with the Topic Browser:

  • Open the Topic Browser from the Go menu
  • Set the In list to desired journals
  • Type a single word in the Find box like redemption or inerrancy
  • Click Search
  • All of the Topics containing your word are listed
  • Click a specific topic from the list to display all of the locations for that topic

Bible Reference Search

As with all Libronix resources you can search the journals for every time a specific verse is mentioned:

  • Open the Reference Browser from the Go menu
  • Set the In list to desired journals
  • Select Bible as the Type
  • Type a Bible reference in the Find box like 2 Tim 3.16 or Romans 7:9
  • Select your desired Match option
  • Click Search
  • All of the occurrences of your passage are listed

Phrase Search

I don’t encourage you to do simple word searches in journals because you’ll receive a large number of results that are difficult to go through. Phrase searches, however, may prove to be very helpful:

  • Open the Basic Search dialog from the Search menu
  • Set the In list to desired journals
  • Type your desired phrase in the Search box and make sure to enclose it within the double quotation marks like: “replacement theology” or “open theism”
  • Click Search

Author Search

The authors of the journal articles have been identified in a separate field so you can easily perform a field search for all of the articles written by a particular author:

  • Open the Basic Search dialog from the Search menu
  • Set the In list to desired journals
  • Type this text for a Field search: Author: Carson or Author: Grudem
  • Click Search
  • All of the articles written by your author are listed

Book of the Month: Theological Journal Library Volumes 1-10

One of the most helpful resources you can add to your Libronix e-library is the Theological Journal Library from one of Logos’ publishing partners Galaxie Software. Volumes 1-10 have just been released in one set. This set contains journals from 27 different schools and ministries!

I remember in my pre-Logos days of trying to personally index the journals to which I subscribed. Finding the information that I knew I read 1 or two years previously was always difficult for me. Now with e-journals hundreds of articles covering every subject imaginable are available right at your fingertips through the search features I described above. I strongly encourage you to add this collection of journals to your e-library!

Sermon Files of Rob Morgan Volume III

Sermon Files of Rob Morgan Volume III is now available. My mentor and friend, Rob Morgan, is one the best expositors and illustrators you will ever hear. Both his insights into Scripture and his creative ways of presenting sermons will benefit you. I (Morris) have personally tagged all of these messages according to topic and passage so they are ready to be compiled into your Sermon File book.

Volume III consists of 1000 sermons covering topics such as:

  • Apologetics
  • Leadership
  • Life’s Priorities
  • Jesus’ Delays
  • Tabernacle
  • Psalms of Ascents
  • Christmas
  • Christ’s Resurrection

If you already own the Sermon File Addin (sold separately) these 100 sermon files will be added to your library when you click Compile on one of your Sermon File documents.

If you’d like to know more click here. If you’re new to Rob Morgan sermon files make sure to also check out Volumes I and II.

Inductive Bible Study and Camp Logos II Seminars

Please take note that we have two very special seminars coming up:

First, we have an Inductive Bible Study with Libronix on February 5-6 in Salt Lake City at Calvary Chapel of Salt Lake. In this seminar I teach you how to use your Bible software in very systematic way. Rather than just showing you how to use many tools of Libronix, I show you what features and books to use first, then second and so on as we actually study a passage. We only occasionally offer this seminar but people have been requesting it so we want to make it available. Please read more about this exciting training by clicking here.

We also have another Camp Logos II coming up February 21-22 at Henderson Hills Baptist Church in the Oklahoma City area. This seminar takes you beyond Camp Logos I as you learn to customize the organization of your books for maximum benefit. You can literally arrange your library and system in such a way that while you’re studying the Bible whatever type of book you need, commentary, theology, history, or dictionary, it is just a click a way. You don’t have to generate reports or perform searches to find what you need. The flow of your Bible study is not interpreted by stopping to look for books. Camp Logos II is only offered a few times each year. I hope you can join us for this event in the central part of the country. Please read more about this seminar including the prerequisites at our website.
