Tip of the Month: Using Find in Commentaries

As you know some commentaries are organized by individual verses and some by paragraphs and still some use a combination of both. In others words, some commentaries contain explanations of Ephesians 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and so on. Others contain entries for Ephesians 1.1-3, 1.4-14, and so on. Here’s is a little trick to help you in paragraph entries when you’re looking for information on a specific verse:

  • Open a commentary with paragraph entries like Mathew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible
  • Take Henry to Mathew 4 and you’ll see the entry is for Verses 1-11
  • Press the keystroke Ctrl+F to open the Find feature at the bottom of the window
  • Type v. 4 in the Find box and you’ll jump right to Henry’s explanation for that verse
The key to making this work effectively is discovering how the commentary marks the verse in the text. Simply look at a few pages in the book to see if the author writes Mt 4.4, v. 4, or vs 4, etc. Whatever form the author uses is what you want to type in the Find box.

Book of the Month: Boice's Expositional Commentaries

I noticed today at Logos.com that the number one download is Boice’s Expositional Commentaries. These books contain very insightful and practical words from the Presbyterian pastor of Philadelphia. If you own these, you know of course, these books, like most commentaries are versified which means you can link them to your Bible. In addition, did you know these commentaries are also topically indexed? Here’s what you can do:

  • Open Boice’s commentary on Philippians
  • Type joy in the Current Location box
  • Press the Enter key and the resource jumps to a discussion on joy
  • Now click the black triangle icon (Reference Locations) on the book’s toolbar and you’ll see every place joy is discussed in this volume. Click one and you jump to it!
